What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are essentially tooth-shaped caps that cover a tooth. They are made from porcelain, metal, or resin and can last up to 15 years with proper care.

When Would I Need a Crown?

Crowns can serve several purposes. Reasons a patient may need a crown include

What to Expect From Your Dental Crown Procedure

Placing a dental crown typically takes two appointments. At the first, Dr. Mark and his team will prepare your smile so that you’ll be ready for the permanent crown. At this first appointment, you can expect:
  • Your tooth will be prepared to receive the crown. This involves removing any dental decay and old fillings that may be present and shaping the tooth to allow for the crown to fit snugly and securely in place.
  • A 3D scan will be taken and used to create your custom crown.
  • A temporary crown will be made and placed. It can take a couple of weeks for your permanent crown to be fabricated so a temporary crown will be used to restore your tooth until it is ready.
Once the crown has been created, you’ll return to SmileCare Dental. At this second appointment, Dr. Mark will:
  • Remove your temporary crown and check the shape, color, and fit of your new crown.
  • Cement the new crown in place.

Types of Dental Crowns

There are a few different types of dental crowns, each having its own pros and cons. The type that suits you best is dependent on your personal preferences as well as your dental needs. Dr. Mark and his team will help you find the solution that is right for your smile.
